Corporate responsibility

Staff at Askham BogVolunteers from our York office in the UK joined the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust on its reserve at Askham BogCommitted to promoting a strong culture of corporate responsibility throughout Mott MacDonald, we seek to ensure that we make a positive contribution, in an appropriate manner, to the well-being of the environment, communities and marketplaces in which the Group operates.

This encompasses ethical values, community responsibilities, social impacts, sustainability, protection of the environment, prudent use of natural resources, economic advancement and employment.

Being an independently owned company we are pleased to continually engage in pursuing a fully integrated corporate responsibility approach – one that encapsulates our values of PRIDE. Putting corporate responsibility at the core of our values means we carry out our operations on a clear basis to determine and regularise the economic, social and environmental impacts of our activities on society.

Social and community issues are the major forces behind our corporate responsibility approach and in pursuing these we have developed a formal corporate responsibility policy to guide us forward – alongside related policies covering aspects such as community, health and safety and sustainability which are regularly reviewed to reflect changes to legislation and best practice. In addition to learning from others, pooling resources and sharing our experiences we aim to progressively roll out programmes and actions throughout our businesses with the purpose of maintain-ing Mott MacDonald’s reputation as a socially responsible global citizen.

Social impact

The very nature of our work has a social impact, which we have extended with the consolidation of our health and education service offerings, helping to influence people’s lives throughout the world.

Cambridge Education Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of our education business, focuses on learning and development across the world. As part of this it has played a role in helping the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) create the Global School Partnership, which promotes partnerships between schools in the UK and schools in developing countries to help them share their knowledge, thereby developing a global dimension within their curriculum.

Our health consultancy, HLSP, manages the DFID Health Resource Centre which assists DFID world-wide in procuring and managing technical assistance for its work as well as supporting policy and strategy development. The HLSP Institute, established in 2005 by HLSP, provides policy analysis, training and applied research with an aim of informing debate on global health issues, national health systems and responses to HIV and AIDS.

Due to our staff’s commitment, loyalty and service to humanity we support a wide range of humanitarian endeavours, such as assisting aid organisations in the field, investing in ethical pension funds and contributing through payroll giving.

Staff in Scottish HighlandsStaff participating in the Caledonian Challenge walked 86km in 24 hours along the west Highlands in Scotland and helped raise £4000 for the Scottish communityVolunteering and sponsorship initiatives have always been part of our culture and in addition to our business activities, they are an important and direct contribution to communities. To build on this in the UK we have joined Business in the Community (BiTC) which aims to inspire, challenge, engage and support business in continually improving its positive effect on society. We have committed 1% of our pre-tax profit to community and charitable initiatives including our long established Charitable Trust which provides scholarships to students. Also, we continue our support as patron for RedR-IHE, the international charity working to relieve suffering in disasters by selecting, training and providing competent and committed personnel to humanitarian programmes world-wide.

The future

In line with our policy we will progressively establish corporate responsibility programmes appropriate to the circumstances across our global operation. These programmes will be underpinned by strong staff consultation and involvement, taking into account the views and aspirations of customers and an appreciation of the evolving expectations of community and society.
