The Prince's May Day Network

May Day Network Logo

As a member of the Prince's May Day Network, the
largest group of businesses committed to tackling climate change, Mott MacDonald took part in the second May Day Summit held on 1 May 2008 in London to encourage positive and collective action on climate change.

Attending companies including Mott MacDonald were asked to sign up and commit to further involvement. The Prince of Wales and the UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, were key speakers in this annual event managed by Business in the Community.

We are taking action on the following May Day pledges:

  • Measuring emissions
  • Developing a carbon reduction plan with SMART targets to minimise your impact
  • Raising the awareness of staff about climate change and empowering them to take action
  • Identifying a Board-level champion
  • Raising customer awareness about the actions they can take to reduce the carbon emissions resulting from the use of products and services
Since the first May Day Summit we have selected a Board-level champion, Kevin Dixon, to have overall responsibility for sustainability. In this capacity his role is to:

  • lead the Group's commitment to further embedding sustainability in all we do
  • advance professional excellence and new thinking in sustainable solutions for our customers
  • encourage engagement in debate at all levels within our spheres of involvement
  • promote ongoing staff accreditation and training in
    sustainability
Because we work in many sectors affected by the sustainability agenda, we are uniquely placed to influence development programmes to promote sustainable thinking. We recognise our role in sharing best practice, innovation and technical knowledge to assist our clients and we see this as an integral part of our business operations. Our ongoing aim is to bring these two facets together to become a catalyst for change. Our strategy will follow an employee-led approach as we’re an employee-owned company with employees who value sustainable practices.

We will also rigorously enforce the adoption by world-wide offices of Local Environment Practice Plans. These support activities ranging from reducing energy and water consumption and recycling all types of office materials – including plastic cups, batteries and paper – to reviewing our suppliers to ensure they
too are supporting sustainable initiatives.
