The next phase of the development of Hong Kong International Airport was to provide the detailed design for a passenger concourse and remote aircraft parking in the midfield area that lies between the two runways.
A key challenge involved maximising capacity while delivering efficient aircraft and passenger movements and upholding the airport’s excellent customer experience. The concourse construction required the relocation of existing operational aircraft stands, making the safe and cost effective phased construction of the building a key consideration from the earliest stage of the design.
We led a series of planning and design studies to determine the optimal arrangement of concourse and stands to achieve the desired balance of passenger service, airfield efficiency, pier service and cost effectiveness. A linear 20 stands concourse was selected for preliminary design. This 90,000m² building has a range of passenger, retail, baggage and transfer facilities and is linked by a below ground transit system to the terminal.
The Hong Kong Midfield Concourse is the biggest airside facility since T1 and will provide 19 new contact stands, enabling 10 million passengers a year to embark and disembark aircraft via air bridges. Alongside the sleek new building will be new aprons and taxiways.
Value and benefits
- We focused on optimising land usage at Hong Kong International Airport, initially examining 14 configurations for the new midfield concourse building and taking aircraft movements into account.
- We carried out detail design with the aid of building information modelling. This has enabled the effective integration of multiple design disciplines – civil, structural, mechanical and electrical, airfield and façade design – on an exceptionally complex project, being delivered to a fast-track programme.
- Our experts delivered advanced environmental performance, with the concourse designed to achieve Gold status under Hong Kong’s BEAM plus sustainability assessment and accreditation system.
- Ongoing involvement of the same core team through competitively awarded contracts for different stages of the development from master plan to detailed design and site support.
