Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?
I actually joined Franklin + Andrews when I left school. Mott MacDonald bought Franklin + Andrews in 2002.
What is the best thing about your role?
I get the opportunity to travel around the world, meet interesting clients and work on exciting high profile and challenging projects.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
Informal but professional.
How would you describe your role and responsibilities to friends or family?
I am responsible for our commercial property team providing project management and quantity surveying services on building projects.
What has been your most memorable project?
Without doubt Wembley Stadium.
How many years have you worked for Mott MacDonald, and what has been your proudest achievement to date?
In total I have been with the same company for 25 years. I’m proud of a lot of things I have done but probably one of the things I’m am most proud of is working with The London 2012 bid team who successfully secured the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games back in 2005. My name actually appears in the one of the official bound documents issued to the IOC as part of the bid process. The London Olympics has delivered a number of things but the one thing that I personally remember was organising a trip for my niece and some her school friends to visit the London 2012 bid team offices. Roll on 12 years later and she has just finished second in a World Ironman Championships in Kona Hawaii.
What project will be one you tell your kids about?
I’m fortunate to have worked on a lot of sports stadium projects including proposals for a new Stadium for FC Internationale (Inter Milan), The Aviva stadium in Dublin, but nothing can beat Wembley Stadium which I still regard as the best football stadium in the world.
Where have you travelled with Mott MacDonald?
I have travelled to various places over the past 20 years ranging from Dallas to Doha and Milan to Melbourne. Most recently I visited Tokyo for four days where I spoke at a Stadia and Arena conference.
What’s the most technically challenging project you’ve worked on at Mott MacDonald?
Again I would have to say Wembley Stadium. What many people fail to realise is that that site owned by Wembley is in effect the footprint of the building which made the construction of the roof and arch a very complex operation.
How has your career developed at Mott MacDonald?
I started as a trainee quantity surveyor back in 1989 and since then have seen my career continue to develop with new opportunities always on the horizon to stretch me further. One of the more recent highlights of my career was being appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
How have you been supported during your career development?
I think the fact that I started as a trainee and now I run a team of 60 project managers and quantity surveyors demonstrates that I have been supported.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
Up a ladder trying my hand at DIY (or when my wife’s away on a golf course!).
What is a random fact about you?
I once appeared on the opening news story on the Warsaw 6 O’clock news! (I was included in a news story about plans for the new Polish national stadium and had been filmed giving a presentation about Wembley earlier that day).
