Opportunity
An airport is like a small city. Because airport systems are so complex and interconnected, it’s often necessary to move, demolish, or renovate one set of facilities before a new one can be built. The challenge is to do this without compromising revenue, safety, security, level of service, or passenger experience.
At San Francisco International Airport (SFO), plans for a modernized Terminal 1 and new Boarding Area B require the existing Boarding Area B to be demolished. But airline operations must remain uninterrupted until the modern Terminal 1 and new boarding area are done. An interim boarding area will accommodate eight gates for airlines including Southwest and Frontier.
Solution
Mott MacDonald is responsible with the design of the reconfigured apron and aircraft gate stands on this important project, including the provisioning of passenger boarding bridges and auxiliary ramp services equipment (fixed ground power, pre-conditioned air, and potable water.)
In addition, we designed improvements to the temporary baggage area and repairs to the existing apron pavement.
Outcome
Our modifications to Boarding Area A and twelve gates will enable the airport to serve wide-body aircraft including the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 777 and 787.
We are designing strategic flexibility into the gates at Boarding Area A for future aircraft including the A350-1000 and 777-9X.
