Transport

In India, the demand for public transport has been growing at around 10% a year over the last decade. Across the country we are helping to meet the need for faster, safer, more cost-effective and efficient transport which includes our work on metros in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Jaipur, Kolkata and Mumbai.

In aviation, construction work is ongoing on the award-winning, topographically complex Pakyong airport at Sikkim in the Himalayas. We had also provided design and master planning for the runway and terminal building at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

Industry

In the Indian industry sector our clients include some of the world’s largest corporations including Glenmark, AstraZeneca, Bunge, Lanxess and Shell. Projects on which we’re providing engineering and project management span the pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals, rubber, metals, automotive and petrochemicals sectors. We are contributing solutions that save energy and resources and reduce waste. We also designed a new rubber products manufacturing centre, enabling our client, Lanxess, to relocate from Mumbai to Gujarat.

In Pakistan, we’re assessing environmental and social risks and opportunities, planning land use and developing mitigation proposals, to enable development of a new coal mine and power station. The Thar region has one of the world’s largest coal deposits. We’re identifying the most acceptable ways to harness this, with a view to environmental and social sustainability and maximum local economic benefit.

Oil and gas

We successfully delivered India’s largest black oil terminal at Visakhaptnam in record time. Thanks to our active risk management approach, including daily safety workshops, machinery training and performance reviews, the construction team worked 11 million hours without any lost time injuries. We are project manager for Shell’s state-of-the-art technology centre in Bangalore.

For Hindustan Petroleum Corporation we have provided design, engineering, project and construction management services for new petroleum, oil and lubricant terminals on the Bay of Bengal.

Water

Our diverse engagements include designing and delivering the INR30 billion Mumbai IV water supply project, India’s largest ever such system. We’ve also reviewed the city’s existing sewerage infrastructure and designed a major upgrade including a network of new connections, treatment works and a 10km long collector sewer.

We are also working on sewerage projects in the state of Gujarat, helping to reduce contamination of groundwater, water supply pipelines and coastal waters.

For a sustainable coastal protection project in Karnataka, India we were project manager and design consultant. The programme will address immediate coastal protection needs as well as support the regeneration of natural defences.

In Bangladesh, we are providing innovative and sustainable solutions to some major challenges. Being a delta country, the challenge of water management is immense. Since 2003 we have been developing the skills and management capabilities for local communities to build and maintain flood defence and drainage infrastructure under the Integrated Planning for Sustainable Water Management project. Improved water management is doubling agricultural production.

International development

In Bangladesh we're working to advance the economy and quality of living throughout the country by developing a framework for selecting, designing and implementing interventions for urban development and management initiatives in cities and towns. We're also leading the Char Development and Settlement project which is helping reduce poverty and hunger by improving infrastructure and teaching management skills. Our work continues on the award-winning English in Action programme, which is using television dramas, mobile phones and iPods to equip 25m of Bangladeshis with the language skills needed to secure employment and escape poverty.

In India we are helping to accelerate the government’s RMSA programme in the most needy states and for the most disadvantaged children. The RMSA programme aims to enhance access to secondary education and improve its quality, impacting 100 million secondary school age children. We are also supporting the Government of India as it aims to make 500 million people employable and productive through vocational training by 2022.

Our specialist health consultants are working to build expertise and experience in Pakistan’s Department of Health, aimed at reducing mortality and improving health among new mothers and their babies. Funded by the UK Department for International Development, the £60 million National Maternal and Child Health Programme is the first crucial step towards a national programme for training 24,000 midwives. Our education experts are also working in Pakistan, including providing support to the Government of Punjab to improve access, equity, quality and relevance of education.

Power

In Pakistan we have worked with the government’s Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for over 10 years and have long been involved in leading design for the extension of Tarbela Dam, which will greatly increase power production.
