The first offshore array in Taiwanese waters and was developed in two phases – a pilot phase consisting of two 4MW wind turbines, and a further 20 turbines in phase 2. We’ve been involved in the project from the early stages, providing environmental advisory services to ensure it complies with the Equator Principles – required by the financial institutes funding the development. Our environmental management and biodiversity plans include measures to mitigate impacts on the Taiwanese white dolphins, a critically endangered species. Underwater noise from piling can damage or temporarily displace some aquatic life, so construction was only during daylight hours and with marine mammal observer vessels patrolling the work site perimeter. Turbine foundations typically transform into artificial reefs over time, attracting molluscs and small fish that feed on plankton, as well as larger fish and aquatic mammals, such as dolphins. Formosa 1 provides enough clean energy to power more than 50,000 homes in Taiwan.
