Liverpool Street Elizabeth line station has been transferred to Transport for London, UK

Liverpool Street Elizabeth line station has been transferred from Crossrail Ltd to Transport for London (TfL) and the Infrastructure Manager London Underground. The station is now ready for the next stage of the extensive commissioning process ahead of the Elizabeth line opening. Mott MacDonald worked for Crossrail Ltd on the design from inception to delivery.

In its central London location thousands of passengers will use the station every day. Very little of the station structure is visible on the surface, while 34m below ground sits two 240m long platforms. The length of the station means passengers can exit at ticket halls at either Broadgate at one end, or Moorgate at the other. Throughout the design, access for all was a consideration in the design of vertical transportation into this new Elizabeth line station.

Mott MacDonald with Wilkinson Eyre Architects worked on the station, designing civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical elements as well as providing construction planning, passenger and transport modelling, and rail safety assurance.

The consultancy was involved in the station safeguarded design; hybrid bill; concept design; developed design; and supported the Crossrail client team through construction. The consultancy also led the conceptual design of oversite development schemes above the two ticket halls.

Work was carried out to simplify the tunnel designs at platform level, the ticket hall boxes, and passenger links to improve constructability, reduce carbon and save cost. Innovative designs in energy efficiency, escalators and safety systems were a common theme throughout the design.

The station provides improved access to the City of London business district - the Elizabeth line will connect London’s major employment centres and support new journeys through central London out to Essex, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. The Elizabeth line will transform life and travel in London and the South East, reduce journey times, create additional capacity, transform accessibility and provide a huge economic boost.

David Eastland, Mott MacDonald’s transport buildings lead, said “Working on delivering this new Elizabeth line station has been a significant part of many careers, new and established, in all forms of design, manufacturing and construction. Over two decades, technology has transformed the design process and communications, as well as the systems and products we use to the benefit of Crossrail and the wider construction industry. The expertise and experience gained on Crossrail is being exported throughout the UK and globally.”
