Challenge and solution
Since 2011 Mott MacDonald has been engaged in delivering the largest and most comprehensive mobility management project in the entire region.
This work has consisted of distinct stages. We developed and implemented a transport mobility management (TMM) strategy that sets out how tools can be used effectively to reduce congestion and encourage uptake of more sustainable modes of transport. Since its adoption by the government the project has moved to a delivery phase – we’re concentrating on implementing activities with all stakeholders and the population of the Emirate.
Stakeholder and public engagement is critical to success of the program, of course, and our specialists are providing each stakeholder with bespoke advice and guidance on the best approach to meet all their specific requirements. At the same time, we’re achieving the program’s broader aims such as the development of site-specific TMM plans for many organisations which set out how to apply TMM in the local context and raise awareness across Abu Dhabi. Our development control guidance shows organisations exactly how TMM should be integrated into the planning and submission process for new developments.
We also developed a common toolkit that the DoT can provide to participating organisations to assist them in the development of their own plans, while complying with the overarching format and structure. These materials are complimented by wider community events — for example, roadshow events we’ve rolled out across Abu Dhabi which have created excellent publicity for the program.
We use social marketing and a tailored messaging programme to meet the needs of different communities in Abu Dhabi. We’ve provided marketing collateral for the overarching strategy and individual TMM plans.
Value and benefits
- We’ve helped raise the profile of sustainable travel far beyond the immediate TMM program.
- Our adoption of social channels to engage younger generations has resulted in program activities being featured prominently in national news. With our input the DoT has received numerous high-profile awards.
- TMM has been integrated into wider development appraisal protocols and is now a constituent component of the traffic impact statements.
