Transport
Stronger transport is vital to economic and social development. We are providing consultancy services to the Uganda National Road Authority for the upgrade of approximately 300km of roads to international standards. In Mozambique, we are developing reference design for a 1000km rail line connecting coal mines in Tete with the port of Nacala. And in Ethiopia we are providing technical review and advisory services to assist the design of a new 760km standard gauge electrified railway from Addis Ababa to the port of Djibouti.
For South African port and rail operator Transnet we examined the feasibility of a 350km rail route linking lines in the Ermelo/Lothair area via the Swaziland railway network to the ports of Maputo in Mozambique and Richards Bay in South Africa. Today, we are providing Transnet with engineering, procurement and construction management services covering port infrastructure upgrade projects at Port Elizabeth, Port of Ngqura and East London.
Energy
We have 1,200 staff working in 22 offices across the region. Our energy projects comprise:
- 30GW of energy generation
-
2.235 thousand kilometers of transmission and distribution lines installed
- 218 projects since 2010
- $85M in active projects in 2016
Rising power consumption is requiring modernisation and expansion of transmission and generation infrastructure. We completed the upgrade of 80km of high voltage power lines in Johannesburg, South Africa, for City Power. This was achieved without switching off the power supply, preventing disruption to customers. For Botswana Power Corporation we designed 200km of 400kV line, providing a transmission ‘backbone’ for the country. We established the regulatory framework, legislation, operating rules and business plan for Botswana’s Energy & Water Regulatory Agency, paving the way for investment in infrastructure.
To improve additional generation capacity, in Ghana we provided the complete range of engineering skills required for development of the 150MW Takoradi combined cycle power station. And in Uganda, we carried out a technical audit of the tariff costs of Bujagali hydropower plant covering civil, electromechanical, financial model, hydrological and geotechnical reviews.
Water
In Kenya we’re working with academic partners to equip Kenya Polytechnic University College with the knowledge and resources to provide effective training in integrated water management. We provided technical assistance to Ghana Water Company Ltd for the rehabilitation and expansion of water systems across 10 regions of Ghana. And we’re advising the Government of South Sudan on provision of safe water and sanitation for up to a million people.
We've been designing and supervising construction of Koga dam and irrigation development in Ethiopia to help reduce poverty, increase food security and improve rural employment opportunities through greater agricultural productivity. In Lusaka in Zambia, we carried out a pre-feasibility study to help investment plans for the upgrade and rehabilitation of the two largest wastewater treatment plants in the city.
Health and education
We are assisting donors and governments to realise their objectives around education reform, inclusive education, school improvement and skills development. The Girls’ Education South Sudan programme will reach 200,000 girls and help them stay in school for longer by improving the quality of schools and helping families to cope with the cost of schooling. In Nigeria, we are supporting national and federal government to transform the country’s education system by giving every child the opportunity to receive a basic education and managing a complementary programme to build government capacity to train 62000 teachers by 2019.
Our health experts are leading programmes to improve health systems and address the challenges of the HIV epidemic. In South Africa, we're supporting the Department of Health to implement universal free healthcare. We are also empowering community caregivers to support vulnerable children through training in child protection, psychosocial support and supportive supervision skills and supporting the Department of Social Development to improve services and community level outcomes for children made vulnerable by AIDS, abuse, neglect and exploitation. We also manage the UNAIDS Technical Support Facility that provides high quality short term expertise in HIV and AIDS to 21 countries in Southern and Eastern Africa.
Under Southern Sudan’s Basic Services Fund programme, we continue to drive value for money through rigorous management of health, education, water supply, sanitation and institutional capacity building projects.
