Opportunity
In Okaloosa County, Florida, traffic congestion was a perennial problem at the intersection of rural two-lane State Road 123 and divided four-lane State Road 85.
The Florida Department of Transportation determined that a flyover could seamlessly merge northbound traffic from State Road 123 to State Road 85. Both roads would have to be removed and reconstructed.
Solution
As prime consultant, Mott MacDonald performed construction engineering and inspection services for this two-year project. The four-lane intersection features a flyover structure made of weathering steel girders with high-strength bolted connections in a superelevated curve.
Outcome
Although placing the girders required detailed traffic phasing, the project was completed on time and on budget.
