Opportunity
The Santa Ana River Interceptor project in California relocates 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) of the existing Interceptor out of the potential scour zone of the Santa Ana River floodplain, and adds an additional interceptor from new subdivisions in Yorba Linda.
Solution
Mott MacDonald designed the microtunnels and provided full time on-site field engineering services during the microtunneling operations.
The five microtunnel segments, totaling about 4,700 feet (1.4 kilometers), include two siphon crossings of the Santa Ana River, a busy road crossing, a single curved section, and a compound curved microtunnel longer than any previously constructed in North America.
Outcome
The relocated interceptor allows Prado Dam to operate at its new increased design capacity and ensures continued and uninterrupted sewer services for residents of Orange County and the Inland Empire.
