Communicable disease control
Since 2000 the Global Alliance for Vaccines and
Immunisation has been increasing global vaccine coverage – our
consultation in 56 GAVI supported countries identified lessons
learned to help inform phase two (Marco Günter)Our work
includes a strong focus on communicable disease control, reflecting
the growing number of global and country-specific initiatives in
HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria. Through our health experts at HLSP and in our team in India, we provide consultancy and management expertise across a wide-range of technical areas including health, education, behaviour change communication, economic analysis, financing systems, public sector reform and institutional and social development. We provide support to global initiatives, national programmes and local community level interventions. Our extensive international experience includes policy, technical and implementation issues, including the appraisal, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of complex national multi-sectoral HIV and AIDS prevention and control programmes.
It is clear that HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions cannot be delivered effectively unless systems and institutions are strengthened. Our work includes support to pro-poor policy and strategy development with a focus on effective action and outcome. We work with governments, bi-lateral and multi-lateral agencies to ensure that HIV and AIDS are addressed realistically within aid instruments such as HIPC (Heavily Indebted Poor Countries), SWAps (Sector Wide Approaches), UNDAF (United Nations Development Assistance Framework) and the poverty reduction strategy process. In partnership with non-governmental organisations and civil society groups, our work focuses on building local capacity to develop effective community based prevention and awareness programmes and deliver high quality services to poor and marginalised groups.
Confirming our strength in this area we are establishing and managing a new health resource centre for the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) focused on HIV/AIDS, other communicable diseases plus sexual and reproductive health.
