Transmission and distribution

Image courtesy of City PowerCity Power, Johannesburg’s municipal electrical utility, is uprating 88kV transmission lines to double the power capacity using state-of-the-art technology. We were responsible for assessing the best solution for uprating and providing detailed designs for new componentsElectricity transmission and distribution is key to a vibrant economy and at Mott MacDonald we have all the skills needed to develop new and manage existing networks.

We have the full range of skills in overhead lines, underground cables and substations and apply these world-wide at all voltages up to the highest in common use including high voltage DC. We also have one of Europe’s largest power systems analysis teams, which undertakes the planning and performance prediction of major utility transmission and distribution systems and industrial distribution.

A major issue with power net-works in the developed world is that systems installed in the 1950s, 60s and 70s now require major rehabilitation to continue to provide reliable service. Hav-ing developed special expertise in this area we’re able to apply unique tools to under-stand and predict asset condition such that work can be planned and under-taken cost-effectively without risking network performance.

Our capabilities in power trans-mission and distribution include:
  • utility power network planning studies, load flow, fault level, transient stability, dynamic stability and electromagnetic transient analysis
  • industrial power system studies including load flow, fault level, stability and motor starting analysis and design of protection and load shedding schemes
  • utility power system protection
  • conceptual design studies for overhead lines, underground cables and substations, including refurbishments and upgrades
  • civil works, including major cable tunnels
  • specification, tender adjudication and contractor selection for power system construction
  • design reviews and construction supervision
  • energy management systems and SCADA
  • detailed design of substations
  • asset management strategies, condition monitoring and performance prediction
  • support to regulatory reviews for regulators and regulates
