Mott MacDonald Crossrail wins update

Back to listing

Mott MacDonald, the global management, engineering and development consultancy has recently been awarded several new design contracts worth a total of around £10 million to help develop Crossrail, one of the biggest and most complex rail projects in the world.

David Gutteridge, Mott MacDonald’s director for Crossrail commented: “We’re delighted to continue our long relationship with Crossrail in delivering this iconic project which will benefit both London and the UK’s economy.”

The largest package awarded to Mott MacDonald builds on the initial sprayed concrete lining designs already completed by the Mott MacDonald tunnelling team through Multi Disciplinary Consultancy package 3 (MDC3) and will involve producing detailed designs for such linings throughout the whole Crossrail tunnel system. Sprayed concrete lining of tunnels is a specialised way of coating the inside of tunnels that has several benefits. Mott MacDonald is leading practitioner in the design of such linings in soft ground including innovative concepts such as using a sprayed concrete secondary lining, so there is no longer a need to erect and demount a shutter, making construction faster and saving both time and money. The secondary lining can also be fire hardened which helps limit financial and environmental costs of repairing any fire damage should a fire occur.

Around 50 Mott MacDonald professionals will be dedicated to delivering this package (C121), providing tunnel design, geotechnics, draughtsmen and project controls support until the end of 2010. Sub consultants on the team are Gall Zeidler, experienced sprayed concrete lining consultants and London Bridge Associates for construction planning consultancy.

Tony Deane, Mott MacDonald’s project manager for C121 said, “We’re committed to assisting the Crossrail team in delivering best practice in tunnelling design and sustainability.”

Mott MacDonald has also been appointed to develop designs for the Paddington Integration Project (C131) which will provide a coordinated scheme for the north side of Paddington Station and include a new station entrance fronting Paddington Basin, complete redevelopment of the Hammersmith and City Station, a new taxi facility and provision for an over-site development. This project has been introduced to accommodate the significant increase in passenger demand predicted for Paddington Station and provide safe, smooth, step-free access through the station. The relocation of the taxi facility forms critical enabling works for the construction of the new Crossrail station at Paddington. For successful completion of the scheme the project team will be collaborating with major stakeholders, London Underground, Network Rail, Westminster City Council and taxi providers, to ensure the requirements of all parties are achieved.

Chris Levy, Mott MacDonald’s project director for the C131 package said, “The team is looking forward to the challenge of delivering the design of this critical element of work for Crossrail”

The detailed design is due for completion early in 2010 and will involve around 40 Mott MacDonald transportation professionals working alongside sub consultants Weston Williamson and London Bridge Associates to deliver multi design consultancy services including all civil, architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical, safety, traffic signalling and communications designs.

Mott MacDonald has also just been awarded major engineering design contracts 124 for aerodynamics and ventilation design, 125 for all tunnel mechanical and electrical design and 162 for signalling. Allan Overton, Mott MacDonald’s, project manager for these packages said, “This is great news, having worked on the initial designs, it’s good to get the opportunity to see them through.”

In addition, to help maintain the overall programme and assist with the further development of design scheme 3, Mott MacDonald is providing continuity consultancy services until the end of August.

Notes for editors:

N.B. Crossrail is to announce further tender results this year and Mott MacDonald along with other bidding consultants remains hopeful of further successful outcomes.

Mott MacDonald and Crossrail - background
Crossrail, one of the biggest and most complex rail projects in the world. Crossrail is planned to run west to east through London from Maidenhead and Heathrow via Paddington and Liverpool Street to Abbey Wood and Shenfield via Stratford. The new railway is being introduced to help London maintain its position as a leading world capital and to reduce congestion on the London Underground network.

Mott MacDonald has been involved in the design of Crossrail since 1994 and played a major role in developing the design for the hybrid Bill. From 2004 we had two major appointments on the project: multi-disciplinary consultant (MDC 3) for the central tunnels and stations east including design of three new stations – at Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel – with interconnecting tunnels and shafts; and as systems and rolling stock consultant (SRC). The above appointments follow on from MDC3 and SRC.

We are pleased to bring our global expertise to the design of the £15.9 billion Crossrail project, providing a range of services including performance specification and technical standards for the central section tunnels design and technical assurance for systems and rolling stock.

Our construction economists in Franklin + Andrews also acted as quantity surveying consultants responsible for producing the detailed cost estimate for the central and south east sections of the project. Enabling works are now scheduled to take place in 2009, with the main construction set to begin in 2010.
