Vulcan House, UK

Vulcan House is the second highest BREEAM scoring building in the UK and Sheffield’s first BREAM ‘Excellent’ building
With the UK Government’s aim to become carbon neutral by 2012, the UK Border Agency wanted to exceed the government’s environmental targets for the development of its new purpose built headquarters, Vulcan House.

A design and build competition brief for construction of the green office building was drawn up by Mott MacDonald with project manager and architectural consultant Drivers Jonas and property advisor Donaldsons, recently bought by DTZ.

The project had to be delivered within a number of challenging parameters including the client’s request for low capital expenditure from the outset, and their expectation to achieve a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) ‘Excellent’ rating.

Based on its design, total building performance has been assessed using BREEAM. The UK Border Agency (formerly called the Home Office) has conducted a rigorous investigation to determine how much CO2 construction has generated. Every detail has been fine tuned to deliver optimum environmental perform-ance. There was a need for low capital expenditure from the outset.

Vulcan House is the second highest BREEAM scoring building in the UK and Sheffield’s first BREEAM ‘Excellent’ building.

The building benefits from low carbon design and construction, and beats government targets set for both energy and water use. A detailed carbon footprint was recorded through construction and use, which will be used to establish a baseline for environmental performance of future government and speculative office develop-ments. Greenhouse gases were tracked through the supply chain and building components used are fully audited and traceable.

Multi-award winning

Vulcan House was highly commended at The Building Services Awards 2008, commended at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2008 and shortlisted for the Building Sustainability Awards 2008. The project also won the Home Office’s Supplier Value Award & Best Contribution to Sustainability Award.

Sustainable design elements include:

  • Heat reclaim and circulation systems
  • HFC free cooling and heating plant
  • Audited subcontractors supplying only approved materials
  • Prefabrication of plant and minimal packaging (which is then reused or recycled)
  • Grey and rain water recycling for toilets
