Singapore's striking Integrated Cultural, Retail and Entertainment
Hub under construction in the up-and-coming one-north precinct is
elevating environmental excellence to new heights.
The futuristic-looking hub will comprise a nine-level civil zone covering 38,000m2 and a three-level retail and entertainment zone spanning 24,00m2. With completion expected in 2012, the building has to meet world class acoustic, environmental, comfort and fire safety standards.
Mott MacDonald is providing mechanical and electrical design services and project managing all building services works for clients Rock Productions and CapitaLand Retail.
One-north is a 200ha community development situated by Singapore's acclaimed Science Parks, the National University of Singapore and the National University Hospital (NUH). Blueprinted to cultivate a cultural and intellectually stimulating environment, the precinct will cater to academics, scientists, business executives and artists working, relaxing, living or learning within.
The integrated hub is one of three centres included in the one-north masterplan. Incorporating a 5,000-seat performing arts auditorium, multipurpose function rooms, event spaces and an outdoor amphitheatre, its civil and cultural zone aims to become Singapore’s cultural, convention and exhibition centre of choice.
The hub’s retail and entertainment zone is designed to have a flowing, open-concept, spiral look – setting a serene, enjoyable and relaxed mood for visitors ambling between floors. With a lavish range of restaurants, wine bars, retail outlets and entertainment facilities as well as a river front location, the zone aims to be the number one leisure destination for one-north communities.
To minimise air conditioning, the design includes open elevations that encourage air movement. The civic square, outdoor theatre and pre-function areas will be open air and, along with the 40m high foyer, will provide a shaded cool environment all year long. Computational fluid dynamic modelling has been used to study air movement and provide reassurance that a comfortable level of cooling can be provided.
The building’s shape provides shading and parts of the roof will be shaded by trellis. A large roof top garden with trees will overlook a reflective pool. Gardens will be planted throughout to blend inside and outside spaces and to promote the building as green-friendly.
Energy saving lamps and movement sensors for activation of lighting in toilets, corridors and stairways, as well as escalator start-up, will achieve over 10% energy savings.
