A multi-million upgrade of one of London Underground’s busiest
stations, Victoria, will increase capacity and ease
congestion.
Victoria Underground station is one of London Underground’s key stations, used by over 80 million passengers each year. Passenger numbers have outstripped the station’s design capacity, causing severe congestion during rush hours. London Underground is forced to hold back customers for minutes at a time every weekday so that the platforms do not become overcrowded and hazardous.
It is projected that, as a result of London’s growing population, by 2016 the Tube will be carrying 25% more passengers. To meet the increasing demand, London Underground is undertaking a number of station and system upgrades as part of TfL’s investment programme. The Upgrade of Victoria Underground station is one of its flagship projects and will cost over £500m.
London Underground appointed Mott MacDonald as lead consultant for detailed design through to construction of the Victoria Station Upgrade. The project is due to start in 2011 and be complete in 2018.

Victoria Station will be enlarged by 50%, the project will deliver:
- Cuts in peak time congestion and improved capacity. A new north ticket hall and entrance will allow passengers to enter the station without having to cross the busy streets separating many offices from the existing station entrance.
- Enlargement of existing Victoria line ticket hall.
- Better access for all passengers. New lifts will provide step-free access from street to Victoria Line platforms and interchange with Circle & District lines platforms. There will be nine new escalators. Wider stairs will improve ingress and egress to the national rail station.
- A new tunnel connecting to the north end of the Victoria Line platform will improve passenger flows.
