Central and South America
Assisting the Bolivian government improve its health status
Monitoring power plant construct-ion in Brazil (Filippo Sormani)
Helping Brazil’s farmer understand the benefits of water management
Upgrading Kingston’s trans-shipment terminal in Jamaica
Our portfolio in Central and South America covers a range of
projects, from Venezuela’s Caracas Metro and Mexico’s Sicartsa
plate mill in the 1980s, to sea defences in Guyana and
environmental management in Belize, to education initiatives in the
Caribbean.
Highlighting our commitment to the continent we opened a new office in Santiago which serves customers in Chile and throughout the Southern Cone.
We have also been making our mark on privately financed infrastructure such as power stations in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, and Ecuador’s New Quito International Airport, where our aviation specialists advised the lenders to the US$550 million project.
While our strongest sectors in the region have traditionally been power, water and transport, today we are adding to these with growing involvement in the environment sector such as irrigation and drainage rehabilitation in coastal Guyana. Here, we have been assessing sustainability factors including materials usage, financial affordability and the impacts of El Niño.
We have also been contributing to the region’s health sector. Our health specialists at HLSP have helped Bolivia’s government develop a family and community health (FCH) policy, designed to improve poor people’s access to primary healthcare. Our role in managing the project – funded by the UK’s Department for International Development – included piloting an FCH model and a participatory management model in the highland region.
