CONTRAM - CONtinuous TRaffic Assignment Model - is a Windows-based
program jointly developed by Mott MacDonald and TRL for modelling
traffic flows, queues and delays.
CONTRAM models drivers’ route choice through urban or inter-urban networks and the consequent queues and delays they experience. Delays are modelled using detailed representations of junctions: signals, priority junctions and roundabouts. This enables impacts of changes in the road network – or in demand – to be predicted, making CONTRAM an invaluable tool for transport planners.
CONTRAM is fully dynamic, which means it can model the build up and decay of queues throughout the day and the impact this has on route choice behaviour. Other features include an ITS option, which models the impact of information provision on incident management, and a dynamic trip matrix estimation facility.
Data can be entered and results analysed via the graphical interface, allowing models to be set up quickly, and results to be presented in a user-friendly way that’s easy for non-transport planning specialists to understand .
CONTRAM has users world-wide, from North America and the Caribbean, through Europe to Australia. It’s been used on a wide range of projects, from examining the impact of improving an isolated junction to modelling large regions with several major cities.
The latest version includes an evaluation copy that contains the full software functionality for up to 25 zone networks. This may be used free of charge for non-commercial applications and may be downloaded from the contram website. It also includes tutorials that guide new users through some basic CONTRAM operations.
