Public Service Electric & Gas (PSEG), one of the largest combined gas and electric utilities in the country, needed a way to bring documents necessary for marking out their underground infrastructure to their field crews. PSEG had tried various ways to handle this task but ultimately chose Mott MacDonald's FieldbookTM service for this safety sensitive task. PSEG’s evaluation process included an exhaustive review of security, reliability, ease of use and speed.

PSEG retained Mott MacDonald as the prime consultant on the project to provide project management, data center services, software coding, software architecture, database updates, software hosting management, ESRI application software and quality assurance and control.

PSEG provided the scanned images and indexes for more than one million service records, as well as its ESRI geodatabase of gas infrastructure. Mott MacDonald quickly loaded this data into FieldbookTM and presented it over the Internet to the field crews. The field crews view the data over secure wide area wireless connections. Documents and maps can be viewed in seconds via the easy to use FieldbookTM interface on truck mounted computers.

An important part of the FieldbookTM service is a Help Desk and role-based security. PSEG supervisors can quickly authorize users and the 600 plus fieldworkers know that in the rare case there is an issue, a quick phone call or e-mail to the Help Desk will solve it. Fieldbook’s ease of use and strong Help Desk support achieved a high level of acceptance among field personnel.

In addition to serving as the prime consultant on the project, Mott MacDonald also operates a data center which is used by PSEG and other clients. The data center provides a Citrix server farm, Oracle and SQL servers, application servers, file servers and ESRI ArcGIS and SDE servers in a secure environment. The data center is connected to the Internet backbone through a managed firewall. Security measures include the separation of data and application servers from Internet facing servers, offsite tape backup and role based security.
