Raleigh West Street Extension

North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) / Raleigh, North Carolina

The Raleigh West Street Extension project proposes to extend West Street between Cabarrus Street and West Martin Street in downtown Raleigh. This project will develop an Environmental Assessment followed by a Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI).

The project also includes traffic analyses, confirmation of data from the previous feasibility study on the project along with project renderings, sketches, plans, sections, details and public involvement.

As a subconsultant to Baker, Mott MacDonald will coordinate with the railroads, including Norfolk Southern, CSX-Transportation, and NC Railroad (NCRR) along with the North Carolina Rail Division and validate designs from the S. West Street Extension Alternatives Study performed in May 2010. Our staff will develop traffic volumes with the project and perform a traffic analysis for the study area including any recommended improvements based on project traffic impacts.

Mott MacDonald staff will be involved in traffic analysis, design, QA/QC, estimating, coordination, and public involvement.

Highlights

  • The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will act as the lead Federal agency on this project. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will act as a cooperating agency.
  • This project will coordinate with the ongoing EA being prepared by the NCDOT for the development of Raleigh Union Station (RUS), which has received Tiger Grant funding, & its associated rail improvements in order to ensure consistency.
  • Due to historic issues & the urban area associated with the proposed West Street Extension, considerable effort has been put into public & agency coordination
