American Water

Helping deliver a billion gallons of water per day

American Water / Arizona, California, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, etc.

Opportunity

Founded in 1886 as the American Water Works & Guarantee Company, American Water is the largest investor-owned water and wastewater utility in the US, as measured by operating revenue and by population served. American Water provides about 16 million people in 35 states and two Canadian provinces with drinking water, wastewater, and other water-related services. The company treats and delivers more than one billion gallons of water per day.

On its website, American Water notes an EPA estimate that approximately $277 billion will be needed between 2003 and 2022 to replace aging water infrastructure, and approximately $388 to replace aging wastewater infrastructure.

According to the company, “We intend to invest capital prudently to enable us to continue to provide essential services to our regulated water and wastewater utility customers. Investing in our infrastructure is critical to our mission of serving our customers high-quality water and wastewater services.”

Solution

Mott MacDonald has used its expertise to improve water and wastewater systems at American Water facilities in several states. These services have included engineering design, route evaluations, condition assessments, data conversion, hydraulic modeling, planning studies, traffic control, development of capital improvement plans, and proposals for rehabilitation or replacement of infrastructure.
