For the 13-foot-diameter (4-meter) tunnel it was constructing, the Middlesex County Utilities Authority project needed a program to record and report on per-shift inspections and report to the client on planned vs. daily progress.
As project manager on the tunnel project, Mott MacDonald developed a tunnel information management system (TIMS) to meet the requirements. We also developed a progress site accessible to the public, so that Middlesex County residents as well as authority executives and other client organizations could monitor progress from anywhere in the world.
We designed a database to store shift reports and a simple user interface for progress reporting. In addition, we designed a site driven by Google Maps into which inspectors could load shift reports and stakeholders could track project progress. We integrated all facets of tunnel construction, including ring build, grouting, and equipment used.
The client now has a tool that allows constant monitoring of the tunnel's progress, plus access to shift reports and details on tunnel construction.
