Providing a safe and comfortable healthcare environment in the Northwest Territories

Government of Northwest Territories and Ernst & Young / Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

The hospital services the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, which includes King William Island, the southern part of Prince of Wales Island, the southern and eastern parts of Victoria Island, and the adjacent mainland.

Upgrading the hospital became necessary to maintain a high standard of care and to meet legal requirements.

Solution

In collaboration with Ernst & Young, Mott MacDonald is providing advisory services for facilities management and output specifications. This includes the following:

  • Modification of existing project-specific output specifications
  • Support & analysis for the procurement, evaluation & negotiation stages of the project
  • Identification of opportunities for innovation
  • Development of facilities management & life-cycle costs
  • Development of key performance indicators
  • Scenario modeling
  • Development of RFP requirements & evaluation criteria
  • Participation in confidential commercial meetings with proponents

Outcome

The new hospital will provide a safe and comfortable environment that meets applicable code requirements and standards.

The hospital will include more than 280,000 square feet. In addition to day procedures and surgery, it will offer inpatient services including emergency, medical imaging, dialysis, obstetrics, pediatric, cardiology, and mental health services.

Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernethy said, “The features and enhancements that will be included in the new state-of-the-art facility will improve the patient experience, and will ensure that NWT residents continue to receive the best care and best health possible.”

Finance Minister J. Michael Miltenberger said, “This is a major step to ensuring the residents of the Northwest Territories will benefit from a state-of-the-art hospital built to current national standards. Construction on the new hospital, which will start this fall, will see the current facility replaced by a new purpose-designed facility that will address patient needs and provide high-quality health care delivery.”
