Mott MacDonald’s Dr Alistair Hitchcock to help champion safety

Mott MacDonald employee, Dr Alistair Hitchcock, has become the youngest and most recent member of the Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS). This independent committee - supported jointly by the Institutions of Civil and of Structural Engineers and the Health and Safety Executive - has a worldwide remit to give warnings to relevant bodies and engineers where unacceptable risk is believed to exist and to identify potential structural problems that could threaten public safety.

Dr Hitchcock, aged 29, aims to help raise the profile of SCOSS among young professional engineers, drawing on his experience and contacts gained from serving four years on the Institution of Civil Engineers London Graduates and Students Committee as vice chairman and chairman. He said, “I am honoured to be invited onto the committee and look forward to reporting progress and key learning points to fellow young professionals.”

He continued, “At Mott MacDonald we’re encouraged to look at our professional development and as part of the review process, I realised I wanted a new challenge that would enable me to add real value. My mentor mentioned that SCOSS was looking at expanding its Committee membership. I took the initiative to find out more and subsequently applied for a position on the committee. It’s great to be selected.”

A member of Mott MacDonald’s metro and civil engineering team, Dr Hitchcock joined Mott MacDonald on completion of his engineering doctorate from the University of Southampton in 2004. He has been involved with a number of large infrastructure projects including Heathrow T5 and the East London Line and is currently working as part of the Crossrail design team. He has also won several industry awards and prizes for outstanding performance and is a keen advocate of corporate social responsibility.

Chris Davis, Mott MacDonald’s professional excellence director said, “We are delighted that Alistair has been awarded this prestigious appointment. Through our professional excellence and personal development programmes, we aim to support our professionals, it’s very important to us that our staff have the opportunity to develop their careers and pursue their goals.”

Richard Williams, Mott MacDonald’s board director with responsibility for safety said, “We are very proud of Alistair’s achievements, he is a great ambassador for Mott MacDonald. Promoting best practice in safety is important to us all and this is a great opportunity for Alistair to help our graduates and those in the wider engineering fraternity to develop awareness and knowledge of safety issues in the sector.”
