Mott MacDonald is Independent Tester on first UK large acute PFI hospital with single en-suite rooms

Mott MacDonald has been jointly appointed by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and Kent and East Sussex Weald Hospital Ltd as Independent Tester for a new acute hospital in Pembury, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The works to construct the new private finance initiative (PFI) hospital, which is valued at around £230 million, comprises of the redevelopment of the original Pembury hospital site and the replacement of the Kent & Sussex hospital in Tunbridge Wells.

The new facility which will provide approximately 66,000 m2 of new clinical treatment space will comprise but not be limited to a women’s and children’s hospital, an emergency care centre, outpatient facilities and Helipad. The facility will also be the first in the UK to offer 100% (513) single en-suite rooms. 1200 car parking spaces will also be provided.

As Independent Tester, Mott MacDonald’s project team will monitor quality and design compliance throughout the design and construction of the project. The team will also be responsible for issuing completion certificates on successful delivery and compliance with agreed standards at predefined stages. The project is scheduled to be fully operational by 2012, but there will be sectional handovers which will mean that the facilities will open in stages.

Lee Durnford, Mott MacDonald’s project manager said, “We take great pride in assisting our clients on this new acute hospital. Mott MacDonald has a wealth of experience in the successful delivery of PFI/PPP projects and is currently providing advisory services on over 200 PFI/PPP projects globally. We’ve also been awarded PFI Technical Adviser of the Year by our peers and ranked top of the PPP Technical Adviser industry rankings in 2008. We aim to bring our skills and knowledge to help deliver a hospital that will benefit Kent and East Sussex communities for many years to come.”
