Increasing development and dwindling green spaces are making homes and businesses more vulnerable to extreme weather events. We were commissioned by the Environment Agency to carry out an appraisal for the Slough Flood Alleviation Scheme.
Our integrated urban drainage (IUD) modelling study involved updating and verifying a 2D hydraulic model using InfoWorks ICM and incorporating all watercourses, surface water networks and sewerage systems. We undertook a full hydrological review of the catchment, developed new hydrographs for each of the watercourses, and then calibrated the model using rainfall data and photographs of observed flooding during two flood events.
The IUD model has been used to identify flooding mechanisms and determine annual damage values. Our study also generated key data outlining the business case for potential flood management solutions designed to reduce the number of properties at risk of flooding.
