Delhi Metro, India

Mott MacDonald was involved with the continuous development of Delhi Metro for more than 14 years.

Our design on almost 40% of phase two included 20 underground and 21 elevated stations, connecting terminals and viaducts.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation needed to expand the Delhi mass rapid transit system to meet increasing transport needs. New circular lines were created to interchange with existing radial lines, to improve connectivity and access to the city's metropolitan areas.

We were appointed detailed design consultant on phase three by the Hindustan Construction Company – Samsung joint venture for contract CC34, which is part of the Janakpuri West to Kalindi Kunj corridor. This involved the design and construction of a 4.5km tunnel from Janakpuri West to Palam by shield tunnel boring machine. It also includes construction of underground metro stations at Janakpuri West, Dabri Mor and Dashrath Puri, plus interchanges with elevated metro stations. We focused on geotechnical, civil and structural engineering services.

We also provided detailed engineering services for mechanical and electrical works and computational fluid dynamics analysis of seven underground stations for Era Infra Engineering.

In addition, we acted as detailed designer for Lal Qila, Kashmere Gate and Jama Masjid underground metro stations.

This involvement in phase three followed our award-winning role as designer for almost 40% of Delhi Metro’s second phase, which included 20 underground and 21 elevated stations, connecting terminals and viaducts. The stations have been designed to handle between 600,000 and 850,000 passengers per day by 2021.

We also worked on the 27km Airport Metro Express Line (AMEL) connecting central Delhi with Indira Gandhi International Airport. This consisted of both underground (45%) and elevated sections via four intermediate stations. We provided detailed multidisciplinary engineering design for Samsung in a joint venture with Alpine Bau and Hindustan Construction Company.
