Garelick Farms, founded in 1931, supports more than 1,000 local farms in New England and upstate New York. Cold winters require close attention to energy efficiency.
At a Garelick Farms facility in Franklin, Massachusetts, Mott MacDonald provided detailed design for the installation of a
cogeneration plant using a Jenbacher natural-gas-fired reciprocating engine. Mott MacDonald provided structural, mechanical, and electrical expertise for the generator unit.
The cogeneration plant makes efficient use of previously wasted energy. Heat from the engine exhaust generates steam for the existing plant steam header. Heat from the jacket water coolers and intercooler supports the demand for process heat.
Selective catalytic reduction was used to reduce NOx emissions. The generator unit can be run in islanded mode in the event of emergency.
