The DEA ensures the constitutional right of South Africans to a clean environment that is not harmful to their health or wellbeing. The low energy technologies, water saving features, renewable energy sources and advanced building management system used in its new headquarters reflect those principles. Careful consideration of form and fabric has contributed to a building that enhances occupant experience while minimising its environmental impact.
The building was one of only two to secure a six green star rating from the GBCSA in 2013 and secured a comfortable points victory over its nearest rival. This included a top innovation rating score, reflecting our design team’s commitment to delivering innovation in sustainability on the project.
The project is also the first public private partnership (PPP) in South Africa to be Green Star rated, setting a market-leading precedent for the country’s PPP environment.
The judges said: “This is the first government building in South Africa to achieve a six green star rating and it received the highest score to date for a commercial office space of this magnitude. A stellar accomplishment.”
