Mott MacDonald's development and use of 5D BIM on Casement Park Stadium in Belfast, Northern Ireland, won the BIM Initiative of the Year Award at the Building Awards.
We produced ‘BIM Protocol – a guide to 5D Publishing’ as a best practice guide that enables quantity surveyors to augment models with 5D information, allowing maximum transferability of estimating, quantification and material take-off data.
5D BIM was used on the 38,000 seat Casement Park Stadium – for which we’re providing complete, design services – to provide cost updates for revised design proposals. This reduced the time it would’ve taken to do this by 70% compared to traditional techniques. Real time feedback against the emerging design allowed constant value engineering, and avoided unnecessary work and delays on an already tight programme.
The project architect, Populous, commented: “BIM was essential to achieving project milestones and adding value. Mott MacDonald was definitely the right partner to work with to ensure a smooth design process using BIM for all disciplines.”
The judges said: “Time saved using 5D BIM on Casement Park enabled the project team to focus on delivering a better value stadium for the client through a process of constant value engineering.”
