Why did you choose to join Mott MacDonald?
As soon as I finished my job interview, I knew I had found my Mr Right – Mott MacDonald. It is hard to explain but I could say it is about the feeling – the feeling was right – I felt Mott MacDonald could provide me with transparency, flexibility, freedom, exploration, satisfaction and fun.
What is the best thing about your job/role?
The best thing about my job is that it offers a great range of opportunities to keep me moving forward in my chosen career – I work as an assistant quantity surveyor holding an honours degree with experience in pre- and post-construction quantity surveying services including measurement and documentation, pre-contract cost planning and control, procurement of NEC trial projects with various government disciplines, preparation of tender document & analysis, contract administration, commercial management of construction, quality management, and insurance. This experience has been gained across the multiple sectors of residential and commercial property, utilities, highways, heavy rail, health and general civil engineering.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
The culture here encourages you to grow. The experience gained for the past few years has broadened my horizons and realized my potential. What is more rewarding is that here the senior management do their utmost to walk me through the whole process in supporting me to progress my career vision and that is all that matters for a newbie in the industry.
What project will be one you tell your kids about?
It has to be my secondment contract with Leighton Asia Contractors Limited on Wynn Resorts Cotai – 500,000m2 development comprising hotel, food and beverage, gaming, retail and spa, designed to a 6-star hotel specification standard and to become the “destination in Asia for gaming”. Instead of the usual work setting, offering services for the employer, we work for the contractor as part of their commercial management team. We have a highly demanding client and you must get used to ever-changing decisions in order to stay ahead in the game. The thing you hear most in the office is, “I want it now!” I think 20 years from now, I would still regard this project to be the one I would tell my kids about – challenging, stressful yet highly rewarding.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
Hiking trails, beaches or on my balcony reading my favourite book.
If you could have any super power what would it be?
Teleportation – so that I could sleep in longer before heading out to work in the morning at rush hour.
