The Mott MacDonald PRIDE values were adopted just over 20 years ago, about the same time that I was starting out as a graduate engineer with the company, specialising in the field of pollution control and environmental protection in our Cambridge office in the UK. Fast-forward to 2020 and these same values are as important today as they ever were. The PRIDE values, representing Progress, Respect, Integrity, Drive and Excellence have been with me throughout my career and continue to define both the company and me personally.
Reflecting upon my very first interview with Mott MacDonald in 1999, I remember being impressed by the company’s involvement in the Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief (RedR), an international charity that provides training and support to humanitarian workers across the world, and of which Mott MacDonald is a patron. The emphasis that was placed on social purpose even at that time was what attracted me to the firm and has continued to be a source of inspiration for me as my career has progressed. I was also impressed by the company’s focus on technical excellence and the number of PhD graduates working at the company.
Since joining Mott MacDonald, I have been fortunate enough to hold various positions within the company, working in different locations, across different sectors and teams. These experiences have provided me with valuable opportunities to learn, develop and collaborate with different clients, colleagues and teams, further strengthening my appreciation of what we can achieve as a team when we are all aligned. I’ve worked on many exciting projects, including a pioneering study on applying carbon capture technology at cement works, some of the first large-scale solar PV projects to be built in Asia and some of the first offshore wind projects in Japan. I have presented at many conferences and was a joint winner of the Best Paper Award at the Powergen Asia 2018 conference.
It’s been great to see the evolution of our company as we have continued to grow and expand. With our growth has come exciting change and added focus on our people – the heart of the business. We are committed to attracting and retaining great people and I’m excited by our equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and corporate social responsibility initiatives, which are continuing to help drive our powerful culture. As a committee member of our Asia Pacific, New Zealand and Australia EDI staff network, I have helped to develop a culture of embracing diversity within our staff and one which treats everyone with respect regardless of their background or beliefs.
I’m incredibly proud to work for a company whose values not only align with my own, but continue to inspire our teams, guide our behaviour and culture, and shape the relationships we form with teams, clients and partners. The lasting positive difference we can have on present and future generations continues to motivate me every day.
20 years on, I still take great pride in working for an organisation that has PRIDE values at its heart.
