Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?
I was keen to join a company that makes a difference and I think we do that. I liked the blend of economics, land use, transport and infrastructure opportunities that were on offer. Also, being based in Liverpool’s iconic Royal Liver Building was a bonus.
What is the best thing about your role?
As head of economic and social development, I have a broad range of specialists in the team. This means I get involved in discussions and activities across a wide range of projects which is interesting and challenging simultaneously. The variety of opportunities we have also allows us to provide space for people to grow, furthermore, seeing people in our team develop their careers and specialisms is one of the best things in this role.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
Hardworking, professional, solutions oriented and satisfying.
How has your career progressed at Mott MacDonald?
My career progression has been a little unusual but this illustrates how external factors can influence your life. My career spans 23 years, 17 of these in consultancy. In 2012, I was a technical director in a niche economics practice and was made redundant. I started in Mott MacDonald on a reduced salary from where I had been previously but in 2012 finding a job was difficult! I’ve progressed back to senior manager level through hard work and responding positively to opportunities. For me, I have found Mott MacDonald presents a world of opportunity and continues to do so. I have now worked here longer than I have worked in any other job and look forward with optimism.
What makes Mott MacDonald stand out from other companies?
We are focused on delivery and getting things done. This sounds obvious in our type of work but I think it is in Mott MacDonald’s DNA and is a differentiator.
What is your favourite pastime?
Travelling on holiday with my family. Kids grow up fast and introducing them to new places and cultures as they do is a great family experience.
Where is your favourite place?
The USA. To be more specific, Yosemite National Park and New York City.
What inspires you at work?
Encouraging technical and professional excellence in my team. Working on business strategy and planning in the fast-paced environment we operate in.
