Do you offer vacation/industrial placements to students?
Students can work with us in either a summer internship or industrial trainee placement based in our UK offices. Each year we normally recruit approximately 100 summer interns and 20 industrial students from a variety of disciplines.
How do I apply and what is the recruitment process?
You need to complete the application process online. Please note that although our site is mobile optimized we recommend you complete the online application on a desktop device.
During this process you will upload your CV, cover letter and any other supporting documents, and you will answer questions specific to the role you are applying. All of this information is required to consider your application.
If your application passes the first stage of our recruitment process you will be sent an email with details to complete 3 online tests (provided by SHL): verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and inductive reasoning.
Please complete the tests as soon as possible as we will not consider your application without them and as we do not have closing dates we aim to fill our positions as soon as we can.
You will receive two emails regarding these tests:
- Initial email from us shortly after applying with instructions on how to access the tests.
- A second email directly from SHL once you have registered for the tests.
You should not register with the site more than once as we will only consider the results associated to the email address you used when you applied to us.
Once you have completed each test a green tick will be displayed next to the assessment name and the results are automatically logged. We download results once a week so there may be a delay between when you have completed the tests to when we contact you. Please be patient we will contact you as soon as possible.
Successful candidates will then be circulated to the teams in the sectors and locations you indicated you wanted to work. If you are short listed to interview for a position we will contact you to discuss the placement and confirm the interview details. Interviews are held in the office where the role is based, giving you an excellent opportunity to meet members of that team.
We have also given you some Hints and tips to guide you through our application and interview process.
Can I start an application and return to it?
Yes! When you apply to us you are asked to create an account or to log in to an existing account and once you've started an application you can 'Save as draft'. Applications are kept in your account for 30 days.
You can access your account via this link http://bit.ly/mmgradgateway
How long are the placements and when do they start?
The majority of our summer internships are 8 week placements and start between June to August. Our Industrial Trainee placements are for 12 months and start between July to September. We will try to accommodate when you’d like to start but for some of our placements we have fixed start dates.
What hours would I work?
Standard hours are 37.5 hours per week and most offices work 9am to 5:30pm. You may be required to work different or additional hours as the job demands.
At what locations are placements available?
We have 30 offices in the UK and most will have summer placement opportunities, however, due to the length of our internships you will need to consider where you will be able to stay without having to organise alternative accommodation. Many of our industrial trainees relocate in order to work for us and we are able to provide advice about finding suitable accommodation in the area.
What work would I be doing?
As all of our placements are working in different sectors, if you are invited to interview for a placement we will discuss what the work will involve. In all of our placements you will be working with graduates and experienced professionals from day one, learning about Mott MacDonald, our structure and culture, and getting involved with real projects to gain relevant experience. We do not have a formal structure for our placements so the more you ask questions and ask to get involved, the more you will gain from your experience with us.
What are your entry requirements?
The majority of our placements are for engineering students in civil, mechanical and electrical disciplines. We do, however, have opportunities for students of other disciplines such as environmental, business, quantity surveying and more niche engineering disciplines.
Due to the volume of applications we receive to join us for a summer internship placement we ask that you are currently at University, have completed the second year of your degree and are currently predicted to achieve a 2.1 or above. For an industrial trainee placement you must currently be at University or looking for a pre-university placement.
If I’ve already done a placement with you can I apply to work with you again the following year?
Yes! We strongly encourage students who have already worked with us to apply for another placement or graduate employment the following year. If you have already completed a placement with us we expect you to have gained a level of understanding about our culture and the way we work. Please apply via the normal application route and contact the team once you have submitted your application so we can look out for it.
Will I be paid for summer and industrial trainee employment?
Yes, all of our placements are paid. For our summer internships you will be offered an hourly rate and paid on a weekly basis. Industrial Trainees are offered an annual salary and paid on a monthly basis.
Do you offer financial sponsorship to students?
We are committed to supporting the students who will become the graduates of the future and that is why all of our placements are paid. We are involved in various schemes, such as the QUEST scholarship, but we do not currently offer financial sponsorship outside of these schemes.
Can graduates apply for summer internships or industrial placements?
No, these placements are specifically for students still studying. We sometimes require graduates on a temporary basis and these positions will be advertised on our careers site.
