Cumbria Council was in possession of large amounts of data about its infrastructure assets. The challenge was to use this to develop information that could convert the potential of these data into real value.
Mott MacDonald used its cutting-edge Moata Geospatial platform to reveal the data and apply it to the problems that needed to be solved. The more that the data could be seen and understood in a geospatial context, the more opportunities to use it were identified.
Moata Geospatial presented clear and accurate information through live map views of all roads, bridges and associated infrastructure owned and operated by Cumbria Council. By making this accessible to everyone involved in an interactive way, teams could access and manage progress on the bridge repair programme in real time.
Collaborative decisions were able to be referenced and audited to ensure truly coordinated activity. We integrated the works management tracker and built a temporary traffic regulation orders system to manage county-wide road closures in a coordinated way.
Coordinated decision-making combined with clear communications led to large reductions in the economic and social impact of the complex recovery programme, which ultimately manifested itself in the total programme being cut by a year.
Through combining our domain expertise with our leading digital products, we also enabled additional value to be generated from the organised data, including more cost effective operation and maintenance of the county’s 50,000 street lighting assets, and predictive risk modelling for bridges based on connection to live external data sources relating to rainfall and river conditions.
