An accurate record of highway-rail crossings is important for ensuring safety and managing necessary upgrades.
Following the requirements of both the Federal Railroad Administration and the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Rail Division, Mott MacDonald reviewed and updated the Railroad Crossing Inventory Record for the state's highway-rail crossings.
We developed a detailed sketch of each location, obtained photos of each crossing, and used handheld GPS devices to obtain crossing coordinates.
Mott MacDonald performed highway-rail crossing inventory work at over 500 crossings across North Carolina. In addition, Mott MacDonald reviewed the crossing inventory work performed by our subconsultant for an additional 500 crossings.
The project pioneered the use of CAD sketch methods to provide electronic crossing sketches, allowing for more efficient updating in the future. Due to strict adherence to Mott MacDonald safety procedures, no incidents were reported throughout this project.
The project was completed successfully and ahead of schedule.
