Opportunity
The Metropolitan Transit Authority needed a system to collect and manage construction management and inspection data for four soft ground tunnels beneath Queens’ Sunnyside Yards, developed as part of MTA’s East Side Access Project.
Solution
Mott MacDonald worked closely with the client to develop a flexible, easily customized Tunnel Information Management System (TIMS) for soft ground tunnels.
Outcome
A remote and secure data entry application developed for HP netbooks allows the shift inspector to do remote data entry followed by an upload function to add inspection reports onto an online application for supervisor approval, via Citrix.
Individual inspection reports are stored in XML format and all uploaded reports are stored on an Oracle database.
TIMS includes a Shift Summary Report and a subset of reports for assessing progress, availability, and utilization of the tunnel boring machine. Collection of shift data includes contractor activities, high-level ring production detail, and labor and equipment counts.
