Opportunity
As Ghana's economy grows, the need for electrical power has increased, driving demand for new power stations.
Solution
As design engineer for the Tema thermal 1 power plant, Mott MacDonald was responsible for process, civil, mechanical, electrical, control, and instrumentation design for a single 126-megawatt open-cycle gas turbine.
Following construction in 2008, we were appointed as designer for a second identical but independent power plant next to the first.
Outcome
In addition to our design work, we provided technical consulting during procurement, and site supervision throughout construction.
After both plants entered operation, we undertook a technical study for the conversion of the two open-cycle power plants to a single combined-cycle plant.
