Mott MacDonald to assist on new Kenya-Uganda Pipeline Extension

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Tamoil East Africa to supply project management services for a new Kenya-Uganda Pipeline Extension (KUPLE). The purpose of installing the line is to provide deliveries of fuel to Uganda from Kenya (Mombasa) terminals via a pipeline instead of by road as this will provide a more secure supply while reducing road congestion and associated safety hazards of transporting fuel by road tanker.

Mott MacDonald’s oil and gas professionals are to provide project management, engineering and construction supervision for the new pipeline which will tie-in to the existing 14" multi-fuel delivery pipeline at Eldoret in Kenya and pump batches of petrol, diesel, kerosene and jet A1 aircraft fuel 354 kilometres to a new storage depot to be built at Kampala in Uganda. The team’s role will encompass finalising the design and completing the detailed engineering of the project in addition to project management of the procurement process and on-site supervision of construction. The project scope includes installation of the pipeline as well as construction of pumping stations, storage tanks and road tanker loading facilities at the new depot.

Colin Gamblin, Mott MacDonald’s project director said, “We are delighted to be appointed on this challenging project. Part of our brief is to review the basic design provided by Tamoil East Africa and propose operational and cost saving measures. We’re going to need to factor in that the pipeline will be crossing varying challenging terrain including swamp lands, forested areas, road crossings and in particular a 700 metre crossing of the River Nile as it flows from Lake Victoria. At Mott MacDonald we have world class expertise in delivering oil and gas projects around the world and we’re looking forward to demonstrating our skills on this exciting project.”

The project is due for completion towards the end of 2010 and the value is anticipated to be in excess of US$200 million.
