Why did you choose to join Mott MacDonald?
I chose to work for Mott MacDonald because of their great reputation within the engineering industry, and because of the progression/excellence of their graduate programme that is in place. This made it clear to me as a graduate that I would be working for a well-respected company which will provide me the opportunity to gain the experience I desired, as well as working for a company that cared about my career progression.
What is the best thing about your job/role?
The best thing about my role within this company is that I'm able to get experience of different disciplines within the same company, and in some situations, on the same project. Although I'm a graduate engineer, I was instantly given a large amount of responsibility. This was great as it made me motivated to work hard, as well as giving me a great opportunity to learn.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
The culture of Mott MacDonald is a focus on excellence and completing the work to our own high standards, whilst also providing a safe and friendly environment in which to work. The other employees within my Bristol office are very friendly, which is helped by all the social events which are planned. Everyone works hard for one another and this makes it a great place to work.
What project are you currently working on?
I'm currently working on the Hinkley Point C Connection project. The team that I'm part of are designing the construction route and temporary haul roads for the construction traffic/maintenance vehicles required for the new power connection from the new Hinkley Nuclear reactor up to Bristol and Avon. This requires site visiting, surveying work, road design and meetings with clients and stakeholders.
When you’re not in the office, where can you be found?
When I’m not in the office I'm generally out and about, going to training for the sports I like to play or hanging out with friends. During the summer months I play cricket for my local team. I'm the 1st XI captain, and Ireally enjoy the responsibility of leading the team and making tactical decisions through the course of a game and a season. I have always played cricket, and it really is my biggest passion, especially when we do social events, touring games or charity events. This year we had an inter-club fancy dress tournament to raise money for both the club and the Teenage Cancer Trust. I went as a make fit sporty Rupert the Bear, which got a lot of laughs.
What would your perfect day consist of?
My perfect day is easy. It would be sat in the sun, having a few drinks in the magnificent Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia watching the Boxing Day Ashes test match. There is not much I enjoy more than sitting down to watch England play cricket, be that test match or one day matches. However, the best form of the game is definitely test match, and there is no bigger game than England vs Australia in the Ashes, and there are not many better occasions than the Boxing Day test match. Always a fan favourite, and definitely would be my perfect day, especially with the way England currently dominate Australia (to be fair, they dominated us for a very long time!).
