Why did you choose to undertake a summer internship with Mott MacDonald?
I had previously completed a year industrial placement with the company so coming back to do a summer internship was an easy choice. In my previous year I had acquired an understanding of what it takes to succeed and gained a body of practical real life knowledge I feel I wouldn’t have obtained if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to work at Mott MacDonald.
What is the best thing about your internship so far?
I've found the level of responsibility immediately given to me was key to learning the ropes. I was allowed to approach tasks using my own initiative but if I ever felt stuck or lost, support was always a desk away.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
The company is very supportive and personal development and training is viewed very positively. The atmosphere and drive of the employees is absolutely fantastic. I would say everyone who works here enjoys what it is they are doing, and no one is staring at the clock.
What project are you currently working on?
Priority Schools Building Programme, Midlands 2 Batch. We have been commissioned by the Education Funding Agency to provide technical advisory services to deliver the re-developments of five schools at various sites across the midlands. The programme requires the co-ordination of a large number of surveys to a challenging timescale that will in turn support the delivery of feasibility studies and option appraisals. The scheme demands us to work closely with the Education Funding Agency to deliver the best possible value for money. My particular involvement has been with Lees Brook Community School assisting in moving from invitation to tender submission to financial close.
What has been your favourite Mott MacDonald social event?
I definitely would have to say sports day for all the UK offices. The Company has a sports and social committee in each office location that organise social events regularly throughout the year. The Birmingham office in particular is quite fantastic but I might be a bit biased. They’ve arranged the sports day for the last two years and honestly this year has been great. Apart from my two gold medals I won for the events I took part in, the overall atmosphere was fun and entertaining. I’ll be there next year to defend my event for a third year in a row.
Do you have a hidden talent? If so what is it?
Not so much of a hidden talent but I really like to sing. I would say I’m a young Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston. Actually, definitely a young Beyoncé in my own company.
