Why did you choose to join Mott MacDonald?
I joined Mott MacDonald as part of the Area 10 joint venture between Mott MacDonald and Balfour Beaty. BBMM secured the Highways Agency Area 10 Asset Support Contract and I transferred across via TUPE from the previous service provider which was A-one+.
What is the best thing about your job/role?
The best thing about my role is I have the opportunity to influence the shape of the forward programme of renewal and improvement projects in Area 10 which means I can contribute to the betterment of the Highways Agency Area 10 network but also have opportunity to directly influence the success of the Area 10 BBMM JV. I also benefit from working with a wide variety of people within the JV and Highways Agency across various disciplines.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
I am still on a learning curve with Mott MacDonald as most of the processes and procedures I work to are all geared towards the Area 10 joint venture. That said, from what I have seen so far the culture appears to focus on safety as a top priority.
What project are you currently working on?
My role doesn’t really focus on one project in particular – more on portfolios of work covering road renewals, structures renewals and highway improvements on the Highways Agency Area 10 network. This covers a wide variety of projects including pavement, drainage, geotechnical, lighting, technology, structures, vehicle restraint systems, signs and road markings within the renewal portfolios through to highway improvements including congestion easing schemes, road safety improvements, environmental improvements and improvements for vulnerable road users. Broadly speaking this covers in the order of 250-300 projects per year and the main focus at the present time is taking all of these projects through the Highways Agency value management process for inclusion in our annual bid submission to secure funds for future years – in this case 2014 to 2018.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
Anywhere from the back garden to catching up with DIY around the house, running, mountain biking, ferrying the kids between weekend activities (football, tennis, gymnastics) coaching a junior football team (FA qualified Level 1 coach) playing football or helping my wife with her photography business.
If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
An Aston Martin.
