United Kingdom / Transport / Global transport principal

John Perry

John at the summit of Pen-y-fan in Wales.

Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?

I was seeking a global company that provided me with the opportunities and challenges to grow my technical, managerial and development ability. Mott MacDonald makes every effort to develop people and I was given many platforms to work from.

What is the best thing about your role?

The travel, meeting clients and colleagues across the world. There are some great people in Mott MacDonald and they will always try to find time to assist.

How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?

Modern, focussed and driven. As an employee owned company, the senior management has a considerable stake in the business and can make decisions without the influence of other external stakeholders.

How has your career progressed at Mott MacDonald?

I joined as an associate (aged 40) in the foundations and geotechnical division of which I eventually became managing director and a board member of the metros and civils division. In 2011, I progressed to business development director of the transportation unit and in 2015 was appointed the group’s transport sector leader. As of the beginning of 2017 I was given a senior strategic role in growing the global transport business and implementing the group’s new strategy.

What makes Mott MacDonald stand out from other companies?

Its professional and technical capabilities and capacity. We can cover engineering, management, and development as one company globally.

What is your favourite pastime?

My family and renovating properties. I have a large family, geographically spread, who I enjoy being with. However I have my own time on renovating old Georgian or earlier properties which meets my practical and financial character.

If you could have lunch with any three people who would they be and why?

Brian Cox – Because I must get down to this time thing confusion

Napoleon – Because he was a great leader and meritocracist

Sophia Loren – She’s a good cook

What inspires you at work?

The future direction, profit, and success. Mott MacDonald must continually adapt and I am pleased to be part of these changes and part of better profitability.
