United States / Management consultancy / Transaction advisory director

Philippe Rapin

I'm constantly amazed to see that where ever you go around the world, every employee is motivated by a genuine drive to satisfy clients, help each other and ultimately to give to the next generation a better company.

Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?

I joined Mott MacDonald in London nine years ago. At the time, I wanted to come back to Europe after three years in New York and two years in South Africa working with other companies. I was looking to join a team with whom I could project myself based on shared values instead of just finding a job. I didn’t know Mott MacDonald until I met a still-existing employee at a career fair. It worked: I’ve had fulfilment and fun nearly every day since!

What is the best thing about your role?

Regardless of the position, the repeating three best things about my jobs are the team with whom I’m building the business, the empowerment given by Mott MacDonald and the enjoyment of entrepreneurship. Every day has a new unexpected challenge.

I am currently the business development director for the transaction advisory services of Mott MacDonald in the Americas. This is quite a large and diverse territory and the daily challenge is quite exciting! Previously, I was the managing director of Mott MacDonald in France which I set up with colleagues in 2010. This business is on a growth path and should double in the next two years.

How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?

Despite its size of 16,000 staff globally, Mott MacDonald feels like a group of like-minded people. I’m constantly amazed to see that where ever you go around the world, every employee is motivated by a genuine drive to satisfy clients, help each other and ultimately to give to the next generation a better company. A very sound culture.

How has your career developed at Mott MacDonald?

I started as a consultant in the infrastructure finance advisory team. The job was exciting because I sat in a team of 15 people with 10 different nationalities. The energy of this team was quite phenomenal. The first thing that struck me was that my management pushed me to explore new skills and challenges as opposed to sticking to what I knew. As such I quite rapidly developed a sense for project management and business development. This took me to develop the infrastructure finance advisory activity in Canada and France at the same time. This was made possible through the collaboration of technical experts from the group and the commitment of the great team I was working with. I was mostly a business facilitator whose role was to open doors and craft innovative business solutions which is not a typical skill you find in an engineering firm. With the support of my management I was encouraged to push these successes even further which ended up in me creating the Mott MacDonald business in France and I am now consolidating our transaction advisory service in the Americas.

What has been your favourite Mott MacDonald social event?

In general, I enjoy Mott MacDonald’s social events because every person I’ve met is approachable. What I like most is meeting my international colleagues. I enjoy meeting new colleagues because I’m fascinated about understanding what they bring to the business and exploring how we can help each other, or simply finding out if they do something I don’t know anything about. I enjoy meeting old colleagues because it’s always good to catch up around a few drinks with like-minded people and share our ‘war stories’. Social events in Paris were also one of my favourites because I was amazed to see my team grow, connect, and be proud of what we’d be achieving while enjoying it. But if pressed to choose, I’d say the Mott MacDonald Table Soccer League (MTSL) championship launched in Paris.
