Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?
Joining Mott MacDonald provided me with an opportunity to become part of a global company with an excellent reputation. I was looking forward to working in an international environment that would offer plenty of challenging opportunities and would allow me a stable path for career growth as well as enjoying every day at work.
What is the best thing about your role?
There are so many, one is hard to choose. My day can involve me in 5 to 6 sectors alternating from one sector to the other. I am frequently learning, researching, and evolving, I couldn’t ask for anything better. I work on numerous marine related projects from around the world and my mind-set has to change on a daily basis from temperate waters to tropical waters to sharks, sea turtles and seagrasses!
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
Collaborative, employee grounded and client focused, that concentrates on the delivery of innovative and well-informed or conversant projects. It’s a great place to work as each day you meet, talk and engage disciplined professionals from around the world from many different sectors and disciplines.
How has your career developed at Mott MacDonald?
I guess it is fair to say through many avenues such as, training opportunities, CPD development, mentoring, having exciting and superior work projects to get my teeth into and without doubt being all built on solid client / colleague relationships. These cumulatively have all helped build my marine expertise as part of my Mott MacDonald career.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
Any opportunity I get I am down near the coast. I grew up on the coast in Ireland and any chance I get you will find me there. Next to that I would be in a fishing port or coastal scenery, walking, mountain biking or just taking in the scenery as long as it’s coastal.
If you could have lunch with any three people who would they be and why?
Three people hmmm, without doubt it would be these three people but I can think of many more.
Jacque Cousteau: Jacque inspires me for all he did in his lifetime. As a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. Along with co-developing the Aqua-Lung, pioneering marine conservation and the way he described his underwater world research in many series of books, I have no doubt it would be a fruitful encounter!
Barack Obama: Again I think along the same lines, as a qualified lawyer, community organizer, senator and of course president, I think he has many skills and life lessons not to mention stories that would make that meeting a memorable life experience. He never had it easy but he in my opinion is a great example of a leader who triumphs no matter what the odds.
Billy Connolly: What can I say about this man? Wouldn’t anytime in his presence be a memorable time. I have seen him live so many times and my ribs constantly hurt from splitting my sides laughing. I think though laughter and his general outlook on life he has brought so much joy to the world and illuminates my day each time he makes me laugh!
