Indonesia

We have worked continually in Indonesia for both public and private clients since 1969, contributing to irrigation, water supply, and sanitation, transport, power, and industry projects.

Our analysis of the impacts of ASEAN Open Skies on Indonesia’s national air travel industry highlighted the positive effects of aviation market liberalization and estimated the direct and indirect economic benefits to the nation of such a policy.

Water

We're providing technical assistance for a project that will address water shortages in Indonesia’s third largest city, Bandung, and its surrounding areas. We are preparing a water supply master plan that includes a management plan for groundwater catchment and identification of reforms needed to strengthen the water supply system. Sustainable management of surface and groundwater is critical to the country's economic development and food security.

We have been continually supporting the construction of water supply facilities for tsunami-damaged areas in the Aceh region.

Elsewhere, we've been involved in activities promoting the sustainable provision of clean water, including water management, and management of municipal water supply companies and financing supply services. We're drawing up master plans for affordable, low-maintenance wastewater collection and treatment systems that can be run sustainably. Master planning will be followed by investment feasibility studies.

Mott MacDonald was appointed by AusAID under its Indonesia Infrastructure Initiative to develop the public-private partnership (P3) technical business case for the Jatiluhur to Jakarta pipeline and water treatment plant.

Transport

We've been appointed as detailed designer for a new build P3 toll road in East Java. Intended to become part of the Trans-Java highway to ultimately connect Indonesia’s largest cities, the toll road is 2 x 2 lanes (extendable to 2 x 3 lanes) running 31 miles (50 kilometers) between Ngawi and Kertosono. It has around 100 bridging structures, challenging ground and hydrology and a capital value of $500 million.

Our transport planning and rail design team finalized the feasibility study of a mass Bekasi monorail transport system between Bekasi and Jakarta. Our portfolio in the sector includes environmental and social impact studies and design for 373 miles (600 kilometers) of road improvement and capacity expansion in Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi.

Our specialists are helping the government to implement the ASEAN Open Skies policy, designed to liberalize the aviation market effective from 2015.

Urban development

Contributing to the country’s urban development, we supported the Second Sulawesi Urban Development Project by improving management and service delivery for infrastructure in Manado and six other cities. We also planned and designed water supply facilities, sewerage, sanitation, and flood alleviation for Surabaya.

Mining

We completed the basic design of various elements that make up the infrastructure for a coal mine, on behalf of PT Suprabari Mapanindo Mineral. We applied skills to the haul road, material handling, civil earthworks, building facilities, water system, jetty structure and configuration, port facility, cost estimation, and construction schedule.

We have also provided basic design for the upgrading of a coal haul road. The current route between Jamut and Batu Bua in Central Kalimantan Province has a weight limit of 30 tons. Once upgraded, the road will accommodate 60-ton trucks, meeting the client’s coal production plan.

Industry

Mott MacDonald was appointed by PT Energi Sejahtera Mas as engineering and procurement assistant consultant for a new oleo chemical facility being developed at Lubuk Gaung, Dumai, in Riau province. The facility encompasses splitting, fractionation, and distillation of 600 TPD fatty acids and 300 TPD fatty alcohols and hydrogenation. A 120 TPD oleic acid stand alone plant is also planned at the facility.

Social and economic development

Following the South Asian tsunami we designed and ran a programme to get 10,000 people on the island of Simeulue back on their feet. Fishermen were hit particularly hard as boats, jetties and storage facilities were swept away. We implemented a range of measures that have increased fish stocks, improved storage and protected the fragile marine ecosystem, all enabling fishermen to make a living all year round.

Our management consultants specialising in institutional development and capacity, worked for the Indonesian Government to help Syiah Kuala University in Aceh obtain the status of an autonomous public university.

We've also been awarded a technical assistance contract by the World Bank to coordinate the economic recovery process of the Aceh and Nias province to help regenerate the area following the 2004 earthquake and tsunami. The project will channel a multidonor grant fund of $50 million towards projects aimed at income generation and employment creation.

Education

We promote education sectorwide policy dialogue and institutional and organizational reform through the Education Sector Analytical Capacity Development Partnership framework. The overall aim of the framework is to contribute to the Indonesian Government’s efforts to strengthen the education system and sustain organizational performance improvement by modernization and improving service empowerment. Our work includes an early childhood development strategy study, a study on teacher absenteeism, and a study of financing of senior secondary education.

Power

We have undertaken several important transmission and distribution improvement projects and have also engineered a number of the new generation of power plants in service. After undertaking technical due diligence and construction monitoring roles at Paiton Power Plant, we monitored operations. We’ve also carried out three environmental and social impact assessments for geothermal power projects in the country totaling 260 megawatts.

Many of our projects involve institutional development, capacity building, master planning, environmental planning, design, construction supervision, and project management.
