Principal transport modeller

Job Profile

You will be involved with a range of transport planning and modelling projects in a Principal capacity with responsibility for delivering modelling work using our best practice guidelines.

Job Description

Your responsibilities will include the following:
  • leading strategic multi-modal modelling and/or highway modelling projects
  • project and task management on modelling projects to include survey programmes, model development, calibration, validation, demand forecasting and economic appraisal
  • check outputs for compliance with quality requirements and industry best practice and motivate others to do so as well
  • organise, train and mentor other modelling resources in order to ensure project delivery and staff / team development
  • provide key inputs to the development of business cases and scheme assessments
  • liaison with clients and other project stakeholders
  • undertake business development activities including proposal writing

Candidate Specification

Applicants must have considerable and proven experience and success in project delivery including commercial and financial management.
The successful principal transport modeller will be committed to providing high quality, affordable and innovative solutions and advice to clients and have first class report writing, project management, supervisory, communication and technical ability.

We are looking for candidates who will have:
  • a numerate degree (or equivalent) ideally in a transport related discipline
  • further MA/MSc qualifications are of benefit but not essential
  • skilled in leading and managing major modelling projects and in the development of robust models to support decision-making
  • substantial experience in transport modelling, model development and skills transfer to junior team members
  • experience of data analysis and/or survey management
  • good communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • a history of innovation and involvement in external professional activities
  • a good understanding of the wider transport planning/engineering environment
  • in-depth experience in developing highway and public transport models from first principles
  • experience in variable demand modelling and forecasting (respecting WebTAG guidance)
  • experience in the use of one or more of VISUM, SATURN, CUBE, EMME is essential
  • geographic information system (GIS) expertise (MAPINFO and ARC) will be of considerable value
  • knowledge of microsimulation software such as VISSIM, PARAMICS, AIMSUM would be of benefit but not essential
