Job Description

Mott MacDonald (MM), offers an opportunity to have a career with the premier employer in the coastal, port, and harbor engineering industry. MM is a full-service engineering company focusing on the protection and restoration of coastlines, increasing coastal resiliency, the development of port and harbor infrastructure, and navigation related projects.

MM is currently looking for a Senior Coastal/Port Engineer with a minimum of 10+ years of experience in coastal engineering and design, and 5+ years Project Management and/or Business Development for our New York City, New York office. This position can also sit in our Freehold or Iselin NJ offices.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Working within the Northeast Coastal Practice and alongside our established NYC Ports Maritime group, primary job responsibilities include:
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities in coastal engineering in NY
  • Build a coastal engineering group in NY while leveraging MM’s global expertise in coastal engineering and resiliency
  • Assist in the development of SOQs and proposals for coastal resilience and ports-related RFPs
  • Assist in identifying potential team members in the pursuit of RFQs and help establish relationships with other firms for future pursuits
  • Develop scopes of work and proposals for clients
  • Manage projects (scope, budget, schedule) and work with sub-consultants and team members and assure quality control of work throughout project execution
  • Provide effective interface with clients, regulatory agencies, public, and other MM offices
  • Manage and develop data collection plans for surveying, geotechnical exploration, and environmental data
  • Manage analysis and numerical modeling of coastal processes such as currents, waves, storm surge, sediment transport, morphology, and wave-current-structure interaction.
  • Manage and perform engineering analysis, preliminary, and detail design of coastal structures
  • Assist in the performance of cost estimating on projects during the design phase
  • Review work by and train younger engineers

Candidate Specification

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Coastal, Civil, and/or Ocean Engineering or related field
  • At least 10 years of engineering design experience
  • Experience with development of statements of qualifications and proposals
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical skills, including technical writing and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with industry standard analysis and design software
  • P.E. License or ability to be licensed in New York within 1 year of hire.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the coastal engineering and resilience industry in NY
  • NY Coastal Engineering Experience
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills
  • Post-graduate degree in Coastal, Ocean, or Civil Engineering with a focus on Coastal, Ocean or Port Engineering
  • Engineering design experience in coastal engineering industry
  • Experience with coastal engineering design in urban settings such as shoreline protection, shoreline restoration, flood control, bulkheads, dredging, and recreational boating facilities.
  • Experience in working on teams of multidisciplinary, urban-focused flood protection and resiliency projects.
  • Experience with application of multidimensional hydrodynamic computer models to assess project impacts.
  • Flexibility to travel regionally
